After much help from Barb, I have finally done it! I painted
my first jar.
What I did was start out with a plain mayo jar and applied
a piece of contact paper in the shape of a snowman to the
jar so paint would not get in that area.
Next I spray painted it white, let it dry for
an hour or so and removed the contact paper. Then I used
a tooth brush and speckled black paint onto thr jar (this
was much easier than I thought it was going to be.
After that dried I used a black permanent marker
and traced the outline on the snowman and added arms to him.
Next I drilled a hole in the top of the jar lid
so that I could attach a single light bulb ( Xmas style,
that normally goes in the back of Houses you light up). I
am not sure how Barb attaches the light, but what I did was
push the light down into the drilled hole, and left the clips
on the top of the cover and used grey tape to tape them down.
This gave me a nice firm in place hold on the light.
After that I placed some pine cones I spray painted
white into the jar along with some winter type berries before
I attached the lid.
I then covered the lid with a bit of batting
and applied some material in a bonnet type style. I think
a black top hat would look adorable on this snowman jar!
But, I didn't have one!
Painted Jars
Made by Barb
First of all, for a light to be in the jar you
drill a hole in the top cover of the jar for a single light
to go down into it. Remember you will have to add a small
mound of cotton on top of where you drop the light and either
make a bonnet out of material and elastic. On most of mine,
I buy old quilts at yard sales and I cut up one in circles
for the tops of the jars (placed on top of lids) and tie
a piece of jute cord and make a bow in the front. They are
really easy and the finished jar is beautiful.....
NOW, on to painting the jars!
I started out cutting out my patterns onto contact
paper
Next I sponged the jars until It was taking to
much time so I then spray painted them. (I like the flat
paint best)
Then I speckled them in black... Okay you take
a old toothbrush and get the brushes good into the black
paint
and hold it up close to the jar and pull the brushes but
with your finger-try it a few times on news paper or something
first.
This really makes your things have a pretty finished
look. I speckle most of my things. You can speckle any color
depending on what your speckling. For instance if your doing
a Teachers jar and it's black then you would speckle white
- or alot of the Cussin jars I do in a cream color and speckle
in a burnt umber paint color (it's dark brown).
Then I took a fine line writer pen and made lines
around the cut out piece.
Next, I high lighted the cheeks and remember
it will all come together when you make you hat or quilt
piece for the top and put something inside. I made some apple
ones today and put 4 baby ABC blocks in the bottom- real
cute. I also made a angel - pumpkin face - a star - a heart-
a snowman - gingerbreadman.
Before you put the contact paper on the jar for
the first time -- make sure you get a corner and make it
so you can lift it up when the paint is dry other wise you
will mess up your jar trying to get it up. I painted one
and then went on to other colors - that way your paint has
time to dry. I probably did 4-5 of each pattern on the some
sticky paper.
Don't forget to spray the bottom of your jar.
ALSO.. You can't use rub on's you need a clear open place
to see the light.
